Who We Are and What We Do

The Friends Society of the Sir Alexander Galt Museum & Archives, also known as “The Friends”, is a registered charitable non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to supporting the Galt Museum & Archives and Fort Whoop-Up, known collectively as “The Galt”.

We don't cover the capital and operational needs of the Galt. The City of Lethbridge does that. The Friends fundraise for the Galt Museum & Archives and Fort Whoop-Up to enhance resources and support educational programs, public events, and special projects that benefit our diverse community. Without this fundraising, many of these activities would not be financially possible. Our efforts support The Galt in its role as eternal gathering place for all visitors to create, learn, and to experience the past and present in our community.

When you donate to The Friends, you are supporting initiatives such as: 

• School busing transportation to help deliver curriculum-based education programs to local schools and groups

• Delivering high-quality Archives genealogy programming and Speaker series events that support Archival research

• Indigenous cultural events that incorporate Indigenous voices, history and perspectives that celebrate both historical and contemporary Nitsitapii Blackfoot culture

• World-class museum exhibitions, interpretive spaces, murals, community programs and tours that educate and inform our visitors and the world

• Education classroom displays that enhance learning and inspire students and visitors 

• Superior museum programs and events for underrepresented community members that support inclusivity and diversity and help create understanding in our community

• The Lethbridge International Film Festival (LIFF) which showcases Canadian and global films featuring and representing under-represented voices, matching the community-focused mission of The Galt
